Redefining the Sense of gates in Urban Places
Effect of City Entrance on Pedestrian Perception
(Case Study: Qom city during the Safavid period and Qajar period)

Until a century ago, cities in Iran had tower, barrow, moat, bridge and gate due to security, economic and social issues. So the only places to enter them were remote spaces. The presence of gateways has always provided an important and relevant definition of entrances to deceased cities, and the place of entry has had a strong identity for citizens, and the entrances have been an important place in each city's access system. Investigations of this thesis show that different inputs in the past architectural and urban system of Iran have received a lot of attention in terms of physical, environmental, historical and communication, but in general these studies have paid little attention to the perceptual effects of entrances on pedestrians. The assumption of this thesis is that if one deals with the perceptual effects of city entrances and urban spaces in the past, different results will be obtained on the properties that the inputs obtain. With regard to the subject matter and objectives of the research, the thesis used a mixed research method (quantitative and qualitative) and case study strategy. The data-driven research method was carried out by examining documents, historical books, travelogues and historical visual sources, observing site by field survey and visual landscape analysis, analyzing observation by matching with documentary and world literature study, and finally deducting findings. Since the historical, religious and pilgrimage city of Qom has been chosen as a case in point, the hierarchy of entry into the city is accompanied by pilgrimage rituals that define places, milestones, landscapes and homes to enter the city. This dissertation examines and introduces the hierarchy of entry points of Qom. The results of the present study show that the entrance of Qom city in the research period was not limited to the location of the gate but included a linear area from the first sighting of the city to the inside of which the most important point is the gate. The series of entrances to the city of Qom have a profound effect on the perception of the pilgrims, thus enhancing the sense of pilgrimage.
